Understanding the Gifts of the Spirit Part 2
4-24-19

1.The Gift available to “all”:

Example: Acts 2:38 (New Spirit-Filled Life Bible) 38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Joel 2:28 (New Spirit-Filled Life Bible)
God’s Spirit Poured Out
 28“And it shall come to pass afterward
That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
Your old men shall dream dreams,
Your young men shall see visions.

oKey words there:

•“My Spirit on all flesh” (Holy Spirit)
•“Prophesy”
•“Dream dreams”
•“See Visions”

oWe see here that by default by receiving the “Gift” of the Holy Spirit we receive the ability to “prophesy, dream dreams and have visions”.

a.Grace - This is on the basis of the Greek word “Charis” Strong’s# 5485 which is = graciousness (as gratifying), of manner or act.
b.(Figuratively) spiritual; especially, the divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection in the life.

Romans 5:19–21 (New Spirit-Filled Life Bible)
 19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.
20 Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace (charis - divine influence upon the heart) abounded much more,
21 so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace (charis - divine influence upon the heart) might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

oOnce again this is the word, “grace” in terms of “charis” spiritually speaking “the divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection in the life.”

2.Individual gifts – Gifts that are more direct to the individual.

a.Grace - This is on the basis of the Greek word “Charisma” Strong’s# 5486 which is: A spiritual endowment.

Example: Romans 12:3–8 (New Spirit-Filled Life Bible)
Serve God with Spiritual Gifts
3 For I say, through the grace (charis – divine influence on the heart) given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.
4 For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function,
5 so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another.
6 Having then gifts (a spiritual endowment) differing according to the grace (charis – divine influence on the heart) that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith;
7 or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching;
8 he who exhorts, in *exhortation; he who *gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

oThere are:

oGifts = that are a “spiritual endowment.” Like in, 1 Cor. Chap. 12

Wisdom
Word of Knowledge
Faith
Gifts of Healings
Discerning of spirits
Administrations
Helps

Not to be confused with the:

Offices

The “Office” is a Calling not a gift – “Charisma” a spiritual endowment.

Ephesians 4:7–12 (New Spirit-Filled Life Bible)
Spiritual Gifts
7 But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift.
8 Therefore He says:
“When He ascended on high,
He led captivity captive,
And gave gifts (presents) to men.”
9 (Now this, “He ascended”—what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth?
10 He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.)
11 And He Himself gave some to be *apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some *pastors and teachers,
12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,……….

Diversities and Differences

1 Corinthians 12:4–11 (New Spirit-Filled Life Bible)
 4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.
6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.
7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:
8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit,
9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit,
10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.
11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

oDiversities of Gifts – “charisma” – spiritual endowment.

oDifferences of Ministries – “diakonos” Offices of ministry in essence,
“Callings/Appointed/Five Fold Ministry”.

oDiversities of Activities – “ergon” – Operations/workings

•Example: Talents – learned or natural.
Ushers
Greeters
Sunday school teachers
Administrations
Grounds keepers

1 Corinthians 12:7–11 (New Spirit-Filled Life Bible)
7 But the manifestation (exhibition/expression) of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:
8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit,
9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit,
10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, * to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.
11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
